Map sleeping and resting areas
Start with the places where people sit or sleep for long periods. These are beds, upholstered chairs and sofas. Before you open any product, mark the frame legs, nearby walls and any signs of harbourage you can already see.
Next, check the furniture itself. Look along the frame and headboard with a torch, because bed bugs hide in seams, joints and gaps. Measure before you buy
Interceptors only work if they fit. Each bed leg needs a cup that suits its width and its floor surface. For example, a wide caster or a leg that sits flat on the carpet may not fit a small cup. Remove alternative bridges
An interceptor only helps if the bed has no other route. Move the bed slightly from the wall when you can. Keep bedding, cables and stored items from touching the floor or the wall, because any bridge lets insects bypass the cups, and your results will mislead you.
However, do not create trip hazards. Safety comes first, so leave clear paths and keep cables tidy. If a perfect setup is not possible, note the gaps in your record. That way you will know how much weight to give a quiet trap.
Label every monitor
Write a short location code and the placement date on a nearby card. Keep a photo of the room layout as well. As a result, any later catch has context, and you can see which position produced it.
Then check each device on a regular schedule. Pick a day that suits you and stick to it, since regular checks make your notes comparable. Also write down what you found, even when the answer is nothing.
Preserve a catch
If you find a suspected insect, do not throw it away. Seal it in a clear container or on clear tape, and photograph it beside a ruler. Many household insects look similar at a glance, so identification matters. Our guide to telling bed bugs from other household insects shows what to compare.

What a trap result means
